At dinner the other night, Noah and I were talking about things I can do to drum up interest in my book on Meryl Streep, which comes out in January. I joked that I could essentially rip-off the Cinemetal t-shirts, but with, like, Sophie’s Choice spelled out in Old English font. Ha ha. Then a couple of days later I didn’t feel like writing, so I just went on Cafe Press and opened up a store. Check it out if you want. As a consumer, I worry that Cafe Press makes these things outrageously expensive. I’m kinda tempted to just get some shirts in bulk and make them myself and give them out for free; the question is, what’s the more terrible idea? To expend loads of my own time, money and labor on a self-promotional joke? Or to ask other people to pay upwards of $40 just to be in on it? Your input is valued.
