A note on the viewing log

Someone suggested to me today that the viewing log is a way to replace Facebook—ie: instead of putting unadulterated information out there, I’m still oversharing about my life, but just being more cryptic about it.

So I thought I should state for the record that I’m not trying to send out a message about my personal life—although I am aware that the fact that I have insomnia may say something about my emotional state, and the fact that almost every night I solve that problem by watching Netflix alone in bed may say something else.

Really, though: I started this viewing log so I could keep track of what I’m taking in on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, because it seems like a good idea to be somewhat organized about it. Also, this will be, I think, the first complete year of my life without any kind of regular access to cable TV. I thought, since we all seem to be at some sort of turning point in regards to how we take in content, and I am someone who is paid to watch certain things, it might be interesting to chronicle what media I ingest within those constraints. Or, rather, there might be something to the juxtaposition of having a certain kind of access professionally, while making the most of my recreational time with fairly limited options.

In any case, I’m doing this mostly for me, and that’s why I’m doing it on my tumblr, which I kind of assume no one reads. If you’ve made it this far, thanks. I think.
